Bill Collectors or Billhead Printers Blocks

The block pictured features a crying moon face that represents the very sad bill collector. It measures 1 1/8” x 1 1/8” and is a copper faced electrotype. These were used in an attempt to get outstanding accounts resolved. Today we just receive a computer generated form letter requesting payment. Or even worse, a collection agency calling and hounding you for a late payment or account settlement. In the past a document would be printed with one of the many graphics to request closure of the problem.
There are also graphic blocks to show that an account has been settled. Included in our collection are: Received Payment, COD, Please Remit, Renewed, Paid, Second Notice, Shipment Invoiced, Special Rush, Via Airmail, and many more. They also used such classic graphics as a man standing while holding his empty pockets out. This would represent a poor man with empty pockets, because your outstanding payment has not arrived. On the mans chest would be text like: You Forgot to Remit, You Forgot to Write, or other phrases.
One of my favorites is the open hand with the text, Pay Up. The only place I know of today that uses that classic image is on the palm of Jesse James from West Coast Choppers . Can you imagine Jesse coming to you with his hand open for payment and seeing the words: Pay Up Sucker! Maybe it’s best if we just settle our bills up front. Although I wouldn’t mind meeting Jesse, but not on those terms. He produces some of the best custom motorcycles being made today. He has also taken the term “Pay Up Sucker!” to a new level. Now we have Pay Up Sucker Productions, a documentary film company with their first documentary in the works and titled: History of the Chopper. I wonder if Jesse saw one of these vintage pay up graphics to get the idea for his classic tattoo? We have a large assortment of these classic old blocks and will be posting many more in the near future.
